If you’d told me a couple of years ago that I would be wearing leather trousers in 2017, I would have laughed in your face. Leather trousers used to make me think of dodgy eBay shops flogging ‘sexy’ attire, those awful shiny leggings that we all used to wear out-out in the early 2010s, and of course, Sandy from Grease. No thank you! However, leather trousers have had a bit of a makeover in the last few years, and these days, they’re up there with the most sophisticated of items, provided you’re wearing them correctly. Fashion queens like Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Olivia Palermo and Victoria Beckham are all fans of the humble leather trouser pant, so I thought: if they’re wearing it, why aren’t I?! They’re such a versatile piece, so today, I wanted to show you how to style leather trousers for any occasion, all the way from the office to the formal event. By the end of this post, you’ll be a leather fanatic, too!

FOR A WORK EVENT
Whether you’re a student, a full time creative or a city slicker, we all have to attend events as professionals from time to time, and it can be difficult to strike the balance between formal and friendly. Leather trousers are perfect for doing just that, because they’re essentially nothing more than glorified black trousers: smart enough for a professional setting, yet bold enough that they can inject some personality into your look. I’ve kept things simple by styling them with nude heels and a long line blazer, but a high neck ruffle Victoriana blouse adds a bit of interest to an otherwise plain outfit. The statement tie neck, delicate ruffles and button front become the focus of the outfit, drawing the eye away from the leather trousers, but still allowing them to shine in their own right.

FOR THE OFFICE
Perhaps you wouldn’t dream of wearing leather to the office, but dress them the right way, and leather trousers can look as chic as your classic cigarette pant. By keeping colours minimal and necklines high, you can prevent leather trousers from foraying into risqué territory, making them perfectly appropriate for office wear. For autumn and winter, dress them with a cosy but chic knit in a neutral colour, and throw over a tailored coat to ward away the cold on your commute. Classic heeled ankle boots will keep your tootsies toasty while baring the maximum amount of skin necessary in the cooler months! Finally, a simple but statement tote will look after all of your office essentials. Interchange coats and knits as necessary!
Ah, the dreaded smart casual dress code! Who really knows what smart casual means? Do you err on the side of smart or casual? I don’t know the answer, but I do know that I always prefer to look overdressed than underdressed! I also know that you can never go wrong with all black, so black court heels, a smart black jumper and a midi length duster coat is a fail safe way to move leather trousers into smart territory. Accompanied by statement accessories, like these glam cat eye sunglasses, chunky gold statement earrings and Gucci dupe belt, you’ll look like you’ve just stepped out of New York Fashion Week. It’s eye catching without being too much – although it was definitely too much for Kew Gardens on a sunny Saturday, let me tell you that!

FOR AN EVENING PARTY
Finally, the occasion that I feel leather trousers are most suited to – the evening party. Whether it’s drinks with friends, a celebratory dinner or a big bash, it’s incredibly easy to dress leather trousers up. In fact, it’s as simple as a nice top and heels. Sounds familiar, right? I’ve chosen a lacy long sleeved crop for a rare flash of skin around the waist, and I’ve accompanied it with flattering lace up heels and a practical but pretty evening bag – ain’t nobody got time for losing your clutch bag somewhere on the dance floor! During the colder months, just throw an elegant tailored coat over the top. Truth be told, I don’t get dressed up much, but when I do, I’m far more comfortable in trousers or jeans, so if this is you, perhaps you’re in the market for some leather trousers!
