In case you missed the Twitter storm, a certain well known retailer recently announced that they would be ridding their stores of items ‘for boys’ and ‘for girls’ and replacing them with gender neutral clothing for children. I can only say this: what took them so long?! In light of this, it feels a little wrong to label clothing ‘feminine’ or ‘tough’, because at the end of the day, you can dress in the prettiest, pinkest, softest skirts and be the toughest gal on the block! ‘Feminine’ and ‘tough’ definitely aren’t mutually exclusive. Furthermore, if you’re anything like me, personal style isn’t really a thing for you, so what you wear doesn’t necessarily reflect your personality. Having said all that, in the world of fashion, flowing florals and angular silhouettes are still labelled feminine and masculine respectively, and to be honest, I’m not bothered if somebody describes my blazer and brogue combo as masculine! For that reason, I’m happy to put gender stereotypes aside and call my floaty skirt feminine. That’s why in today’s post, I’ll be showing you how I like to mix masculine and feminine – here are 3 ways to toughen up your feminine wardrobe.

THROW ON A BIKER JACKET
When you think biker jacket, you might imagine towering, bearded men riding Harley-Davidsons with flames and skulls emblazoned on their back. Oil, dirt, chrome, spikes, adrenaline – they’re all words that come to mind when I imagine the Rock Riders chasing down Furiosa on burning sets of two wheels in Mad Max: Fury Road. The biker jacket is steeped in masculinity, so why does a biker jacket work so well over a floral wrap dress, for example? I don’t know the answer, but I do know that it’s a fail safe way to toughen up a feminine look.
BIG UP YOUR BOOTS
In a similar vein to the biker jacket, chunky lace up boots – or combat boots, as they’re sometimes called – have traditionally masculine associations. Members of the military or the police have always worn these sturdy boots with their hardy soles and laces no matter the weather, and that’s why they’re the ideal item for hardening an otherwise girly look. For a more feminine twist, try a heeled pair, but whatever you choose, enjoy the extra comfort and durability that comes with shoes that are actually designed for function! Something so rare for women’s shoes…
BUTTON IT UP
Although it’s changing, the starched collar, button up white shirt brings to mind suits, briefcases and ties. It’s been the traditional attire of the (usually male) office worker for an age, which is why it works incredibly well as a way to toughen up a floaty, feminine skirt. Forget wearing your boyfriend’s shirt in the bedroom – it’s a bit of a cliché anyway *wink wink*! Instead, make it work for your own job! You can either keep things neat for the office, or you can roll up those sleeves and tie it up at the front for a more relaxed look.
