Monthly Mixtapes | June 2018

While thinking about where I wanted to take my blog following my hiatus, I realised that for an aspiring musician, I don’t talk about music nearly enough. To be honest, at many points over the last few years when I’ve really struggled with my mental health, I lost every ounce of passion I had for music, both in pursuing my own music and in listening to others. Because of that, I’ve had a lot of catching up to do in the time since I found my feet again at the start of the year!
I’ve never really been able to pin down my music taste, as it changes a lot with my mood and the time of year amongst other factors. Therefore, I’m afraid I don’t have an expertly picked playlist of songs of similar mood, tempo and genre. However, I think as listeners, and especially as songwriters, we should always step outside our musical comfort zones. In fact, since January, I’ve been making a conscious effort to expose myself to new genres, as well as reaching back into the past rather than listening to what’s on the radio right now. Not everything I’ve listened to has been enjoyable or even inspiring, but the overwhelming majority of music has been, and I’ve cultivated a healthy appetite for genres beyond pop and indie guitar music.
This shift is definitely represented in June’s playlist, which features plenty of soul, R&B and hip hop alongside the odd pop track. I think most of the names will be familiar to you, with veterans like Jessie J and Aloe Blacc releasing some gorgeous music in recent months, but there are one or two artists who are new to me this year. For example, I’ve fallen in love with the soulful vocals of Amber Mark. Conexão is easily one of my favourite songs of 2018 so far and I cannot wait to hear more from her going forwards!
I think you’ll recognise that there’s a lot of Latin influence in the music I’m listening to recently. Having grown up in a family that blasted Stéphane Pompougnac mixes all summer long, jazzy chords and bossa nova rhythms are part of my genetic makeup, so I’m thrilled to see a resurgence of Latin music. Jay Prince, Cardi B, Tom Misch and Disclosure are bringing all the summer feels with their latest tracks, and I don’t know about you, but I love a summer track by the poolside. This mixtape was my listening material of choice for soaking up the Croatian rays at the start of the month, and it was pure bliss. If you’re going on holiday somewhere warm this summer, this is definitely the mixtape for you!
I’ve included an embedded Spotify playlist as well as links to YouTube. However, where possible, please listen via music services such as Spotify and Apple Music, especially if you’re listening to smaller artists. This ensures that the artists are remunerated fairly for their work. That’s fair, right?
