AUGUST 2018 MIXTAPE

Thanks to all the excitement surrounding the release of my first single, I almost forgot about the monthly mixtape! It might almost be October, but there was some really great music in August, so I didn't want to skip it, and here we are almost a month later!

Perhaps the most exciting release during August was the gorgeous 'Sweetener' by Ariana Grande. It was such a highly anticipated album following the events in Manchester last year, but what she created was so unexpected in the most wonderful way. If you want to know what the album sounds like in a word, you only need to look at its name: 'Sweetener'. Although I would have gladly included every track on the album, I picked two of my favourites, 'get well soon' and 'blazed', which I think sum up the dreamy yet upbeat feel of the record. There's also something very special about 'get well soon' which brought a tear to my eye as soon I noticed it - read about that here.

A surprise favourite in August came in the form of 'Happy Now' by Zedd and Elley Duhé. It contains a few key elements which just get me right in the heart, you know? Firstly, the lone guitar playing those broken chords in the intro, and later, that crunchy 7 chord that strikes partway through the second verse. It's somehow upbeat and downbeat at the same time, and despite being a simple pop song in so many ways, it appeals to the emotions. I think Zedd is a genius who just keeps getting better and better!

I also came across 'Straight To The Heart' by Nick Talos and David Spekter, neither of whom I had heard of before, and it sounds like what I imagine Bon Iver would create if he decided to make dance-pop. I don't know about you, but that's right up my street! In the August mixtape, this is swiftly followed by what must be one of the most awaited comeback pop singles in the last decade. I am, of course, talking about 'Missing U' by Robyn! I think 'Dancing On My Own' is nostalgic for so many people in its own way, and it cemented Robyn as the princess of electropop, if you ask me. 'Missing U' has that same high energy, emotional vibe, with the synth bass and relentless bell arpeggiator driving the song forwards. Can't wait to see what she does with her album next month!

Enjoy the mixtape via the embedded Spotify playlist below, and be sure to follow me on Spotify to stay up to date with new music and the monthly update to the mixtape! Where possible, I have also included links to YouTube, but as always, please listen via your preferred music service where possible. It really helps artists out - thank you!
